Salt and Ice

Broad Question

Does salt effect ice.

Specific Question

How does salt water effect the melting of ice and if it does why.

Variables

Independent Variable: The amount of salt in the water.

Dependent Variable: mass of ice after 5 minutes.

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

The amount of ice and water.

Hypothesis

I hypothesizes is the more salt there is the quicker it melts.

Plan General

Put ice in cups of salt water. Time it for five minutes and measure the mass. repeat five times and record the data.

Experimental Design

I am going to conduct my experiment at my house. I am going to be the only person involved in my experiment. I am going to conduct 4 trials so it will be accurate. I will put all of my data onto a data table on the computer. I will document all of my data on a data table.

Materials List

1. ice cubes
2. table salt
3. 5 cups
4. scale.
5. timer

Detailed Procedure

.1 Fill five cups with different amounts of salt
.2 Fill each cup with 250 ml of water
.3 Put one ice 40 g cube of ice into each cup
.4 Time for five minutes
.5 Remove ice cubes
.6 Measure ice cubes on scale
.7 Record data on computer

.8 Repeat steps 1-3 five times

Background Research

The salt in salt water is the same as table salt (sodium chloride)

Salt makes it so water will not freeze

Salt lowers the freezing and melting point of ice.

Adding salt to water introduces new particles to the water making it harder fore it to freeze.

Conclusion

The original porous of this experiment was to fine out if different amounts of salt effected the speed of ice melting. The results of the experiment is the rate of melting went up until 100 grams of salt.

Discussion

my hypothisis was that the cup with the most salt wold melt the fastest.
This was mostly true exepet the one with 100g of salt witch was serpased in
melting speed by 75g of salt. the melting rate whet constantly up until 75g of salt.
The testing went well and there no complications.
